The History of Frank Murphy

The annual sales were legendary, airing on televisions around the world, the owners were good friends with top name fashion designers Pauline Trigère, Oscar de la Renta, Vera Maxwell, and Ralph Lauren, and it’s where one of America’s most acclaimed artists, Gordon Parks, got his start.  Since its beginnings in 1931, at the corner of 5th Street and St. Peter in downtown St. Paul, Frank Murphy has carried a legacy like no other, bringing the latest fashion movements to the Midwest.  It grew into an iconic retail institution known for couture fashion, beautiful store windows, opulent décor, and the annual Give Away Sale.  Celebrities including Carol Channing, Gloria Swanson, and Carol Burnett frequented the shop.

Re-opened in 2013 by successful real estate agent, Krista Wolter, Frank Murphy continues to feature casual, active, work, cruise, and formal wear, catering to each generation with the full range of sizes and price-points.  The garments and accessories are individually chosen by experienced buyers from designers around the world.  Great gift options are always available.  Highly involved in the community, Frank Murphy offers in-home shopping, private party events, fashion shows, and participates in charitable events often.
